Historical Legacy
Ganesh Tekdi Mandir was built more than 250 years ago. It is one of the most ancient and renowned temples in Nagpur. The temple dates back to the Bhonsle dynasty. Rulers and warriors from Bhonsle dynasty used to visit this temple to seek blessings before embarking on important endeavors. ‘Tekdi’ means hillock in the Marathi language. It reflects the elevated location of the temple, which adds to the site’s serenity. Earlier, the temple was a modest structure with a tin shed and very small area. In 1970, the Indian Defense Ministry handed over the land to the temple trust. Yashwantrao Chavan, the then Defense Minister, led this initiative. A major reconstruction project began in 1978. By the year 1984, thousands of devotees contributed generously. Visionaries like Shri Ganpatrao Joshi also supported these efforts. Their contributions gave the temple its current look and feel.
The influx of devotees from across the Vidarbha region kept growing. Eventually, the temple trust recognized this and added another 20,000 square feet to the temple complex in 1995. Since then, many amenities have been made available for devotees’ convenience. These include lawns, water fountains, and parking facilities.
The Divinity
The specialty of Ganesh idol at the Tekdi Ganesh Mandir is that, it is Swayambhu i.e. self-manifested. The idol was discovered back in 12th century, seating below a peepal (ficus religiosa or sacred fig) tree. To this day, it seats below the same tree. It is believed that Lord Vishnu resides in this temple as the peepal tree. The holy idol of Lord Ganesh originated from the roots of the peepal tree. The idol was originally small in size. It has miraculously grown over the centuries. Now it stands as a towering figure of devotion. Adorned with golden ornaments on its forehead and silver jewelers, the idol is a sight of divine beauty.
The temple’s crown jewel, a silver crown, is on show exclusively on auspicious days like Chaturthi and Ekadashi. Devotees believe this is a Jagrit Devasthan, a spiritually awakened shrine where prayers are unfailingly answered. Thus, bringing a constant stream of worshipers from morning till midnight almost everyday.

The temple trust receives monthly donations of ₹3-4 lakh. These donations are used to maintain the sanctity and facilities of the complex. Generous contributions from devotees reflect their immense faith in lord Ganesha.
